The One Where I Learn Bulgarian Ways

I wanted to share just a few cool things that I've learned and seen so far while in Bulgaria. There's so much history and culture here, so I know I'm barely scratching the surface, but I'm thankful for this start as God continues to lead me on this journey!

Name Day Celebrations

Bulgaria is largely an Eastern Orthodox country. With being "surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses" (Hebrews 12:1), many people are named after, or something similar to, Saints who are celebrated throughout the year. My name, Mariana, fit right into this custom as one of the many variations of the Virgin Mary's name (along with Maria, Marina, Mara, etc.) which is celebrated on August 15th. Who doesn't love a reason to celebrate!?

Birthday Traditions

On your birthday, do you usually think about what you'll give to others?? Well, you will in Bulgaria! It's customary for the birthday person to offer chocolates to those around them in celebration. I thought this was such a sweet picture of generosity!

The 2-4pm Snooze

I knew that siestas were ingrained into cultures like Spain, but little did I know that people in Bulgaria also take this post-lunch time as a "почивка" (pochivka = break/rest). Coming from America's culture of nonstop work, this has actually been a tough one to learn as I unlearn the lie that rest is not productive or valuble. I'm thankful for the reminder that I'm a human with needs, and it's the Lord who holds the world in His hands so that I can rest.

Head Gestures

Body language differs depending on who you talk to, but in general, the way people in Bulgaria nod their heads may cause some confusion for new comers. Shaking or bobbing of the head left to right is a motion of agreement, like saying yes, while a quick nod up and down means no. This is one of the changes to my habits that I've been keenly aware of because, whether I'm listening to someone tell a story or engaging in the conversation, I'm also thinking about what my body language is communicating.

Nature's gifts

Bulgaria is blessed with a stunning environment, from mountains to seas. Not only is it beautiful, but fruitful! Bulgaria is teeming with berries and herbs, so when in the mountains, you have to keep an eye out for mint, thyme, blueberries, and so much more. And yes, my roommate and I have dried our own herbs for tea :) This is a beautiful reminder to me of how much the Lord has provided through the simple things!
